Mother's Day is probably one of the busiest days of the year for cafes and restaurants. Our 3pm Sunday High Tea booking at Fortnums in the pretty town of Sassafras was no different. They were bursting at the seams! In fact, they were still cleaning up from the sitting before. With a big crowd filling the entranceway on a freezing cold day, the staff could have become flustered with all the pressure. They didn't. One very friendly waitress was despatched to appease the hungry horde with apologies for their lateness (it was only a few minutes) and that we wouldn't be kept waiting for too much longer. We weren't because with military precision and loads of smiles, every family was taken to the table that had been allotted to them, no confusion, no kerfuffle. Every table was set with lovely tablecloths, linen napkins, a little vase of chrysanthemums (nice touch for Mother's Day) and that all-important three tiered stand.

Orders were taken for drinks and when our teas and coffees arrived, all four of us commented on the quality of the brews (real tea leaves!). We saw glasses of bubbles being handed out to mothers and grandmothers around the room but decided to keep it an alcohol free afternoon. A bit later on, one of the smiling waitresses gently reminded us that sparkling was included in our package price - well, who were we to refuse? This attention to detail is what makes eating out just that extra bit special - and the wait staff at Fortnums certainly knows how to do that. The décor is quite plain but it's in a pretty setting and Mum loved the fact that she could see out to a little garden where rosellas and lorikeets where feeding. Now to the food! Out came the first plates, with a super fresh selection of beautifully made finger sandwiches, yummy little pieces of frittata, freshly made blinis with smoked salmon and crème fraiche, the butteriest baby sausage rolls and cute little quiches. All were demolished and all were pronounced super yum! More tea anyone?

Yes please, don't mind if I do. Then came round two - three plates of sweet deliciousness. The second best scones in the world (Mum's are first, sorry) with divine home made raspberry jam and cream, tangy baby lemon tartlets and mini vanilla slices, plus chewy-crunchy marshmallows and brownie slices. All just the perfect pop-in-your-mouth size to savour and enjoy. Everything is made in house and every plate was prettily decorated with little autumn leaves and wispy flowerets, too. There were lots of ''mmmms" and "aaahhhs" coming from our table and the rest of the restaurant. I loved it. Dad loved it. My sister loved it. The most important person of the day? She absolutely loved it!!! And the icing on the cake of this most delectable and more-ish high tea? The chatty, friendly owner handed out a little bunch of chrysanthemums to every mum in the room. All this for $49! What's not to love?
